Disturbing trend for our water
Disturbing trend for out water, as I just got back from Tallahassee learning so much from Sonia Cruz at Epincorp about Emerging Contaminants. I took three of her classes while there to earn my CEUs to keep my Master Septic Tank Contractor’s license valid. Sonia is so knowledgeable about septic systems and our environment and how the two can work together. I really enjoyed her class.
I learned about different contaminants that septic tanks have to work hard to clean up as much as they are capable of before the contaminants go into the ground and back into our aquifer. One contaminant that is becoming a problem is medicines. As people look to dispose of old medicines that they do not need anymore they end up throwing them away or flushing them down the toilet. It turns out that much of our water in the United States is contaminated with these medicines.
What are contaminants?
Even the medicines thrown in the trash contaminate the dump sites. Researchers have spent much time to figure out the best way to dispose of them. The best way that has been found is incineration. After some research, I found where in Florida we can safely dispose of our medicines and it is actually not that difficult. Here is the web address to find a location close to you.
I noticed that there is a police station near my house that I could easily drop them off at. I am sure there is a place near you as well. This class was so interesting to me, that I wanted to share a little bit of what I learned. Hopefully, you too find it interesting and want to use this information to make Florida’s natural waters a little bit safer for all of us. If only a few of us made some simple changes we could make a difference.
