6 Signs Of a Failing Septic System

6 Signs Of a Failing Septic System
Failing Septic System

Of all the things to worry about in a home, a failing septic system can be one of the most stressful. Unfortunately, many homeowners wait until it’s too late to get the proper treatment. If proper routine maintenance isn’t conducted, you can find yourself spending thousands of dollars in repairs.
Here are some tell-tale signs that you have a failing septic system.

Slow  Sink Drainage

After flushing toilets or using the shower, you notice that water is draining slowly. If you are experiencing slow drainage, it could be a sign of worse things to come. Call Lapin Services for a pump out or inspection to get to the root of the problem before things become worse.

Water Backing Up

A septic system has failed to do its job when you are experiencing water backing up into sinks, toilets, tubs and washing machines. This could be one of the worst symptoms of a failing septic system. No one wants to deal with waste coming back into his or her home. Once you flush, it should stay gone. So call Lapin Services if you are experiencing water backing up into any part of your home.

Unusual Sounds In Your Home

Ever been in a home where there were weird “gurgling” sounds every time you used the water or flushed a toilet? Well that gurgling sound may be a sign that the home’s septic system is failing. Make sure to get ahead of the problem before it gets worse.

Unpleasant Odors

If you start noticing unpleasant odors in or around the house, it could be your septic system failing. We aren’t talking about odors such as spoiled food or pets. This is a potent, sewage-like odor. It’s very unpleasant and hard to explain to guests at your next family get-together. Make sure you give us a call before that family reunion if you’re experiencing this foul smell.

Noticeably Soggy Areas in Your Lawn

Drain Field Failure - Soggy Field
This doesn’t mean your typical puddles of mud and water after a heavy rainfall. If you notice soggy areas in the grass or soil, specifically in relation to where your septic tank and drain field are, it could mean your drain field is bad.

Areas Of Grass Of A Deeper Green Color Than Surrounding Area

Failed Septic Field
Although this may not be a definitive sign of a problem, greener grass around the septic tank and drain field could be cause for an inspection.  This could happen for two reasons.
(1) The effluent in the septic system releases gasses through the soil to which can facilitate the healthier growth of grass and vegetation.  In this case, there is absolutely no cause for concern.
(2) This greener grass can also happen when the soil below is physically saturated with effluent from the septic system. Septic effluent acts as a strong fertilizer, therefore creating greener grass and more pronounced vegetation. At this stage, people have waited far too long and may face costly bills for repairs.
If you see this symptom, there is no reason to get frustrated.  Usually at this stage, you will be seeing other, more pronounced symptoms of a bad septic system so make sure you contact one of our professionals to better assist you.
If you are seeing any of these symptoms in or around your home, call the professionals at Lapin Services. We will find the cause of the problem and provide you with quality care. Your peace of mind is valued to us.
