Independence Day Plumbing Tips

Independence Day Plumbing Tips

Independence Day weekend is coming up. That means that many of you will either be attending some form of celebration or hosting one. Whether you’re hosting a family gathering, a cookout, or attending a picnic to watch fireworks, we have some plumbing tips for you to remember. The last thing you need on this cherished holiday is a plumbing problem.
As with any other holiday or event, your home’s plumbing and appliances can take a beating with all that comes with celebrating. Here are some tips that will see you through the weekend.
The Ice-maker Stopped Working, What Do I Do?
It’s hot out, and nothing helps more than ice-cold lemonade while you wait for the food that’s on the grill. That is of course, if you have ice. But what if your ice-maker stops working? There could be many reasons why this happens. First, make sure that water is flowing freely to the ice-maker and that there aren’t any kinks in the tubing. If that doesn’t work, you can give us a call to figure out if it’s a plumbing issue or an appliance issue.
Don’t Put That In The Garbage Disposal!
Your garbage disposal should never be treated like the trashcan. Not everything is meant to go down the drain. Being that said, during the July Fourth holiday, make sure some of your famous barbecue items don’t end up in the garbage disposal such as corn husks, potatoes or pasta salads. Fibrous and starchy foods don’t do well in garbage disposals and can create expensive damages. Also, stay away from pouring fats, oil and grease down the drain as this can also damage your garbage disposal.

Oh No, The Toilet Is Clogged!
There’s no cause for concern just yet. A clogged toilet is more common than you may think. The first thing you should do is to shut off the water valve behind the toilet before it overflows. Next, get your plunger out and go to work! When you’re finished, go ahead and turn the water valve back on and give it a flush to see if you’ve taken care of that clog. If it flushed normally, good job! Just be careful what your flushing down that toilet next time. Here are some more tips on what you can and can’t flush. If you’re still having a problem, give us a call.
You’re Running Out of Hot Water
If you’re having guests spend the night, we recommend you wait at least 10-15 minutes in between showers to replenish the hot water. However, you may want to take a look at your water heater. If you see signs of corrosion, you may want to consider replacing it.  Here are some Water Heater Maintenance Tips to help extend the life of your water heater.
Make Sure Your Gas Plumbing Works Before Your Guests Arrive
If you have a grill or an outdoor kitchen that attaches to a gas plumbing line, you may want to give it a trial run before your guests arrive. You should make sure that it is operating the way it’s supposed to or give us a call if it isn’t. The last thing you want is for your guests to go hungry at your July Fourth celebration.
