Do not ignore sewer smells

Persistent plumbing odors usually have a cause inside the system.

A single smelly drain may be local buildup. Odors throughout the home can point to venting, sewer, or septic conditions that need diagnosis.

Common questions

Bad Odor FAQs

Why does my drain smell bad?

Common causes include buildup inside the drain, a dry trap, venting trouble, sewer gas, or a septic issue.

Are sewer smells dangerous?

They can be. Persistent sewer odors should be investigated because they may indicate sewer gas entering the home.

Can cleaning the drain fix the odor?

Sometimes. If the smell comes from buildup in a single drain, cleaning may help. If the cause is venting, sewer, or septic related, it needs a different repair.

Why does the odor come and go?

Odors can change with water use, weather, trap evaporation, venting conditions, or movement in the sewer or septic system.

What if only one sink smells bad?

One smelly fixture may point to local drain buildup, a trap issue, or bacteria in that fixture line.

What if the whole house smells like sewer gas?

A whole-home sewer odor can point to venting, main sewer, septic, or trap problems and should be checked quickly.

Should I cover the smell with air freshener?

No. Covering the smell does not solve the cause. Persistent plumbing odors should be diagnosed.

Quick service and knowledgeable people.Septic system pump tank seemed slow to empty during a previous inspection for a real estate sale. Our first company had some root and sand concerns but pump and drainfield ok. Second company said sand wasn’t terribly bad but noted drain field not taking water and gave a quote for new septic system, first was contacted and then said pump might be getting weak if slow was a concern. We wanted a third opinion. Lapin looked it over and suspected pump was weak. They replaced the pump and the flow rate double based on time to empty the tank. That proves drain field is working. So, we probably replaced a pump that might have lasted a few more years, but proving the drain field was necessary to satisfy our buyer, so pump is worth it. Pump was only 11 years old compared to previous pump that lasted 17 years. I’m happy. Lapin good to work with and I would call them again if needed.
