Problems We Solve
Common Sewer Lateral Problems We Repair
You do not have to diagnose the problem yourself. These are common issues we help confirm, explain, and repair.
Root Intrusion at Pipe Joints
Tree and shrub roots follow moisture and naturally seek out sewer pipe joints. Once inside, roots expand, restrict flow, and eventually crack the pipe wall. Left untreated, root intrusion causes recurring backups and accelerates pipe deterioration. A targeted point repair or spot liner restores the joint and stops roots from returning.
Cracked or Fractured Pipe Sections
Ground movement, soil settlement, and the natural aging of clay or cast iron pipe leads to cracks that allow wastewater to leak into the surrounding soil — and groundwater to infiltrate the line. A localized crack does not require replacing the full lateral. Our technicians repair only the affected section, minimizing excavation and cost.
Failed or Offset Pipe Joints
Where two pipe segments meet, joints can shift, separate, or deteriorate over time due to soil movement or ground settling. An offset joint creates a ledge that catches solids and causes blockages. We use video inspection to locate the failed joint precisely and perform a targeted repair without disturbing the surrounding line.
Pipe Corrosion and Deterioration
Older cast iron and clay sewer laterals corrode from the inside out as hydrogen sulfide gas attacks the pipe interior. Corroded sections become rough, collect debris, and eventually collapse. When corrosion is isolated to one area, a spot liner or patch repair extends the life of the lateral without a full replacement.
Bellied or Sagging Pipe Sections
A belly forms when a section of pipe loses its grade and sags downward — usually from soil washout or poor original installation. Wastewater pools in the low spot instead of flowing to the main, creating chronic slow drains and solid buildup. Depending on severity, a targeted excavation and re-grading of the affected section resolves the issue.
When to Call
Signs You May Need Sewer Lateral Repair
If you notice any of these signs, call Lapin. We will find the cause and explain what needs to happen next.
Multiple Drains Backing Up at Once
When a single fixture backs up, the blockage is usually local. When two or more drains — toilets, tubs, and sinks — back up simultaneously, the problem is almost always in the lateral itself, downstream of where the house drain connects. This is a clear signal to have your lateral inspected before the situation becomes an emergency.
Gurgling Sounds from Toilets or Drains
Gurgling is the sound of air being displaced as water struggles past a partial blockage or damaged section. If you hear gurgling from your toilet when you run a sink, or from floor drains when you flush, there is likely a restriction or structural issue in the sewer lateral that needs professional attention.
Persistent Sewage Odors Inside or Outside
A sewer lateral that has cracked or separated leaks sewer gas as well as wastewater. If you smell sewage odors inside your home without an obvious drain source, or notice a foul smell in your yard — particularly along the line between your house and the street — a damaged lateral is likely the cause.
Unusually Green or Lush Patches in Your Yard
Sewage is rich in nitrogen. If one section of your yard grows noticeably greener or lusher than the surrounding grass — especially in a straight line from your house toward the street — wastewater may be leaking from a cracked or separated lateral and fertilizing the soil above it.
Recurring Clogs Despite Regular Drain Cleaning
If your drains clear after cleaning but the problem returns within weeks or months, there is likely structural damage — root intrusion, a crack, or a belly — that drain cleaning cannot fix. Repeated snaking is a temporary band-aid. A video inspection identifies the underlying issue so we can repair it properly and end the cycle.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sewer lateral and who is responsible for it?
The sewer lateral is the pipe that runs from your home’s main drain line to the city or county sewer main in the street. In most Central Florida jurisdictions, the homeowner is responsible for maintaining and repairing the entire lateral — from the foundation of your home all the way to the connection at the public main. This means repair costs fall to you, not the municipality. Lapin Services can confirm jurisdiction-specific responsibility during your inspection.
What is the difference between a point repair and a full lateral replacement?
A point repair (also called a spot repair) addresses a single isolated section of damaged pipe — typically two to ten feet — without disturbing the rest of the line. Full replacement involves excavating and replacing the entire lateral from the house to the main. Point repairs are significantly less expensive and less disruptive when the damage is truly isolated. Video inspection is the only reliable way to determine which approach is appropriate for your situation.
How does a spot liner work and is it as good as replacing the pipe?
A spot liner (cured-in-place spot repair) is a resin-saturated sleeve inserted into the pipe and inflated against the damaged area, then cured in place to form a new structural lining within the existing pipe. No excavation is required. When installed correctly in the right conditions, a spot liner restores the structural integrity of the pipe and can last 25–50 years. It is appropriate for isolated cracks and joint failures where the surrounding pipe is otherwise intact.
How long does a sewer lateral point repair take?
Most point repairs — including inspection, excavation, repair, verification, and backfill — are completed in a single day. Larger repairs or those requiring permits may take an additional day or two. We will give you a realistic timeline during your estimate so you can plan accordingly. In most cases your plumbing is restored to full service the same day repair work begins.
Do I need a permit for sewer lateral repair in Orlando?
In most cases, yes. Orange County and the City of Orlando require permits for sewer lateral repairs and replacements. Lapin Services handles the permitting process on your behalf — we pull the permit, schedule the required inspections, and provide all documentation. You do not need to manage the permitting process yourself. Working without permits can create legal and liability issues when you sell your home.
Will the repair damage my yard or landscaping?
We excavate only over the specific section that requires repair — not the entire path of the lateral. We work carefully to minimize impact on landscaping, irrigation, and hardscape. Any excavated areas are backfilled and compacted before we leave. For spot liner repairs, no excavation is required at all. We cannot guarantee zero impact on landscaping directly over the repair area, but we take every practical step to protect your yard.
My drains are slow but not completely backed up — should I still call?
Yes. Slow drains are often the first warning sign of a developing lateral problem — root intrusion, a forming belly, or early-stage corrosion. Catching these issues early almost always means a less invasive, less expensive repair. Waiting until you have a full backup means the damage has progressed further and emergency service rates may apply. A video inspection gives you a clear picture of what is happening so you can make an informed decision.
Does homeowner's insurance cover sewer lateral repair?
Standard homeowner’s insurance policies typically do not cover sewer lateral repairs — the lateral is considered a maintenance responsibility of the homeowner. Some insurers offer optional sewer line coverage as a rider, and a handful of municipalities offer lateral insurance programs. We recommend checking your policy and contacting your agent. Regardless of coverage, Lapin Services provides honest, fair pricing and will never recommend repairs beyond what your situation requires.
