Plumbing Tips For Fall

Plumbing Tips For Fall

Fall is here and the time for pumpkin carving and making pumpkin pie is about to be in full swing.  Whether you celebrate Halloween or just getting your ingredients ready for your famous Thanksgiving recipe, we have some tips for you to prevent plumbing or septic catastrophes.
First, you need to be aware of what you can and can’t be putting down your drains. We have multiple blogs giving you plenty of information on this subject.  You can start with our Septic Do’s and Don’ts as well as Protecting Your Drain Pipes.
Plumbing tips for fallOkay, so you came back from the pumpkin patch and want to start carving out your next decoration or make some homemade pumpkin pie from scratch.  Whatever you do, do NOT, allow any of the pulp or pumpkin seeds to enter the kitchen sink, especially if you have a garbage disposal.  Pumpkin pulp and seeds can do serious damage to your garbage disposal as well as cause major clogs.
If you think draining pumpkin pulp down the kitchen sink is bad, flushing it can be even worse.  The powerful flush from your toilet will only cause the seeds and pulp to clog further down the pipe stream, making it harder to get to the clog and costing you more money to remedy the situation.
Instead, you should do your carving and cutting of the pumpkin on a newspaper and once done, you can wrap up all the scraps and just toss it in the trash.  You can toss the seeds, roast them, or plant them in your garden for the next seasons’ fall harvest.
